3 Important Plumbing Maintenance Steps For Your Commercial Property

If you own a commercial building, you probably have a lot of activities to manage. It's not the most glorious, but your commercial plumbing should never be overlooked. With the following maintenance steps, you can tackle some common plumbing issues head on before they become rather serious. 

Unclog Drains 

At some point, someone in your building is going to flush the wrong thing down a toilet. This can create clogs, which you need to deal with before water flows onto your floors and causes expensive water damage.

There are several methods you can try to remove clogs in commercial toilets. One of the easiest is pouring hot water directly over the toilet's drain. With any luck, the added pressure will break through whatever is causing the clog. If that doesn't work, you can use a wire hanger or purchase a toilet auger. These tools should be long enough to reach the clog.

If the clog is deep within the toilet's drain, you may need professional assistance from a plumber.

Inspect Seals Below Toilets

The toilet's seal at the bottom plays an important role: it prevents water from seeping out onto the floors. For this reason, you need to make it a priority to regularly inspect this seal to ensure it's in pristine condition.

If it's not -- and you notice visible signs of wear and tear -- you need to address the damage before severe leaks develop. If only slight damage is present, you may be able to use a weatherproof sealant. It's easy to administer and will successfully plug up small cracks. If your toilet's seal is significantly damaged, it will need to be replaced entirely. 

Keep an Eye Out for Mold

The last thing you want to find in your commercial bathrooms is mold, as it can create unsanitary environments that end up getting your staff and clients sick. Mold will have a dark appearance and its texture will almost resemble fungus.

If you identify any of these distinct growths in your commercial bathrooms, proceed with caution. Wearing some sort of protective gloves and mask, scrape the mold away. You will then need to apply some bleach to disinfect the area. This will prevent mold and mold spores from growing back.

Having a commercial property means taking care of various plumbing issues. This won't be challenging, though, if you follow a strict protocol and use professional plumbing services when the issue is beyond your means of fixing.
